Abstract

This article emphasizes the importance of the information industry for scientific and technological development, in view of the exarcebation of the competitiveness among companies and countries in a globalized world. The information industry in Brazil is still far from the ideal due to lack of financial, human and operational resources, and, especially, due to a lack of data consolidation and to the absence of a business information searching culture. In other words, most companies do not search for information before making decisions. Even though the Federal Government is the major information producer, this information is used only for the government internal management, and is not shared with the private sector.
