Abstract

It is necessary to adopt an indexing policy in information systems since indexing is an important part of the system as it determines search strategies results. The paper identifies elements of indexing policies through the use of indexing manuals of the Sub-Rede Nacional de Informação em Ciências da Saúde Oral, Centro de Informações Nucleares and of the Coordenação Geral de Documentação em Agricultura. The results showed that indexing manuals actually reflect the indexing policy elements described by Carneiro (l985). Specificity and exhaustivity are considered very important elements because they are related to the documentary reading and indexing policy adopted by the system.
