The dissertations in the information science graduate program at ufmg in the nineties: an overview

Abstract

This research portrays graduate-level academic production in the Information Science field at UFMG, focusing on thematic tendencies, kinds of research, and predominant methodological approaches. A comparison was drawn between the findings obtained and those found in similar dissertations in other programs in this area. Sixty-three dissertations written between 1990 and 1999 were analysed, and a tendency in developing research on topics such as Management of Information Centers: Users’ studies, Request and Use of Information Centers and Communication, Editorial Production and Publication was evidenced, as well as na impressive amount of empirical research and a predominance of quantitative approaches. Case study was the methodology most utilized, amounting 50% of the total number of dissertations analyzed, whereas theoretical research was used in only dissertations, 4,8% of the total number analyzed.
