BETWEEN THE GIFT, THE DISTINCTION AND THE RIGHT TO THE CITY - REFLECTIONS ABOUT THE EXCHANGES IN TOURIST PRACTICES
Abstract
This theorical essay proposes a reflection about the exchanges involved in tourist leisure practices. Based on an interpretive and critical examination of some classic sociological authors who dialogue with social exchanges, the tourist phenomenon is debated from the interpersonal relationships, the gift theory and the expected and longed-for hospitality rules, derived from a symbolic economy recognized by the habitus of those involved. Considering the capitalist scene, where the enjoyment of time dedicated to leisure is mainly commercialized and accessible only to a part of the population, the economically privileged, the exchanges in the
relations between tourists and residents is discussed, currently showing less the precepts of donations and more the idea of social distinction. Considering that tourism is a form of leisure and, therefore, a constitutional right in Brazil, which should be widely accessible, we turn to discussions about the right to the city as an ideal that can be triggered by envisioning more democratic forms of access to the exchanges/tourist experiences and the participatory management of tourism.
