THE ADVENT OF CINEMA IN DIVINÓPOLIS, MINAS GERAIS, 1890-1916
Abstract
Examining newspapers, memorialist’s books, agricultural questionnaires and state’s statistical censuses, this article aims to examine the historical circumstances that favored the emergence of permanent cinema in the city of Divinópolis, Minas Gerais, in a context marked by demographic and productive dynamization of the rural villages and modernizing processes in the urban area. In order to expand the interpretive possibilities on the subject, this article seeks to contextualize cinema in the face of a broader universe of entertainment, emphasizing it’s relations with the cultural offers promoted by associative and business enterprises.
