"THE 'RECREATION STREETS' INITIATIVE: A LOOK AT RECREATION AND CHILDHOOD IN RIO DE JANEIRO IN 1958"

Abstract

The Rua de Recreio was an initiative conceived and organized by Physical Education teacher Alfredo Colombo in the late 1950s, when he was Director of the Department of Physical Education (DED), an agency subordinate to the Ministry of Education (MEC). The Ruas de Recreio were created with the aim of filling the school holidays of children and adolescents living in Rio de Janeiro with recreational activities, always with the guidance and supervision of Physical Education teachers. The objective of this study is to investigate how the Ruas de Recreio were organized in the aforementioned state, particularly in 1958, the year of their creation. In this investigation, we used the method of documentary analysis. The results demonstrate that the initiative sought not only to develop activities for this group during the holidays, but also to develop a new habitus in the children and adolescents living in Rio de Janeiro.
