REPRESENTAÇÕES DE LAZER NA REVISTA BELLO HORIZONTE (1930)
Keywords:
Belo Horizonte, Gender, History of Leisure, Written PressAbstract
This article analyzes the representations of leisure constructed by the magazine Bello Horizonte. Its pages reveal the habits, achievements, and preferences of the elites who spoke of a capital city on the rise, both economically and socially. The discussion developed from the selection of some covers, chronicles, and advertisements, observing what the periodical's representations of leisure are and how they are constructed. The analysis showed that these representations are traversed by social markers such as gender, race, and class, constructing scenarios and possibilities for leisure that differ according to the subjects and their places in the new capital of Minas Gerais. This magazine is understood as an agent of its time, since by constructing representations of sports, cinema, beaches, stalls, and bars, it produced meanings about the city, through the invitation and celebration of some practices, as well as questioning and discouraging others; that is, prescribing ways of experiencing it, signaling changes, mobilizing traditions, and pressing for transformations.
