This article analyzes the relationship between work and leisure at the Barra de Imbé (RS) through an incidental ethnography conducted between 2018 and 2026. Drawing on Tim Ingold’s concept of taskscape and the dwelling perspective, it discusses how the local category "passartrabalho" (toil/hardship) transmutes the raw labor of fishing into enjoyment. By observing young workers and veteran fishers, the research suggests that skill and sociability on the shore dissolve the rigid boundaries between productivity and idleness. The study concludes that fishing at the river mouth constitutes a pedagogy of the landscape and an ethics of presence, in which physical effort and technical mastery are inseparable from existential fulfillment.
