LEISURE AND RACIAL LITERACY IN AN EDUCATION CENTER IN THE MONTE CRISTO COMMUNITY IN FLORIANÓPOLIS

Abstract

This article aimed to investigate the similarities and differences between leisure and racial literacy in an education center in the Monte Cristo community, in Florianópolis, from the perspective of educators who work in this space. The study was guided by Latin American epistemologies, drawing more specifically, but not exclusively, on black feminist epistemologies. From this perspective, we are proposing a decolonial effort, which requires whites and blacks to adopt a combative stance in the face of colonial legacies, such as racism. This is a descriptive and exploratory case study with a qualitative approach to the data. 18 professionals from the investigated context participated in the study, who responded to an online questionnaire prepared for this investigation. The data was analyzed using the content analysis technique. The results demonstrate the need to expand the concept of leisure from the perspective of educational practice. As a phenomenon that manifests itself in culture, leisure is not exempt from reproducing social evils and racial literacy seems to be an important ally in overcoming this characteristic. We conclude that in the context investigated, racial literacy contributes to leisure experiences, making them meaningful and socially located, being relevant for confronting structural racism.
