Abstract

Tourism and museums are modern phenomena embedded in processes of transformation of cities. In many ways, they respond to systems of values and interests that intensify processes of socio-spatial segregation, generating new urban centralities and investment spaces that operate by the logic of city as merchandise (value of use superimposed by the value of change). However, we believe that museums and tourism as meeting spaces can represent possibilities for social inclusion and citizenship formation by stimulating the occupation of the city spaces. In this essay we propose to reflect on citizen tourism in museums as a possibility of social inclusion, where the individual appropriates his own city, thus claiming its value of use.
