Slave Trade Ads in the 19th Century: Textual Trajectory, Entextualization and Indexical Orders Mobilized on Contemporary Ads

Abstract

The present article features the analysis of the textual trajectory and the entextualizations of two ads concerning slave trade issued in 1854 - i.e., in the 19^th century - in the Correio Paulistano newspaper. It also features the analysis of five ads posted in this century (21^st) on the Mercado Livre website. One of my main goals was to highlight the indexical orders precipitated in those entextualizations. To achieve such goals, I took bases on the notion of ‘textual trajectory’ as it is employed by Blommaert (2010) and Fabrício (2013, 2014); on Bauman and Briggs’ (1990) concept of ‘entextualization’, and on the notion of ‘indexical order’ as Silverstein (2009) has presented it. By tracking both the ads’ textual trajectory and the entextualizations of discourse, it was possible to notice these indexical orders deeply related to black people’s lives: dehumanization, objectification, abjection, inferiority, devaluation, and precarization.

Professora permanente do Programa de Pós-Graduação em Memória Social, na Universidade Federal do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (Unirio). É PhD em Lingüística Aplicada e Estudos da Linguagem pela Pontifícia Universidade Católica de São Paulo (2010). Finalizou o pós-doutoramento em Linguística Aplicada na Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro em 2014. Tem experiência na área de Lingüística Aplicada, atuando principalmente nos seguintes temas: práticas identitárias (raça, gênero e sexualidade) e discurso, ensino de língua inglesa via internet, autonomia do aprendiz, autonomia e trabalho docente do professor universitário de LI. Coordena o projeto "Trajetórias, Indexicalidades e Performances Discursivas de raça, gênero e sexualidade em contexto on/offline" e também o Research Network "Race, Gender, Sexuality and Language", grupo de pesquisa pertencente a Internacional Applied Linguistics Association (AILA). Faz parte do conselho fiscal da Associação de Investigadores(as) AfroLatino-americanos(as) e Caribenhos(as). Participou da Diretoria da Associação de Linguística Aplicada do Brasil no biênio 2016/2017.
