A Look at the Sociointerational Discourse Analysis Between Caregivers and Institutionalized Older Women in Bathing Care

Based on Ethnomethodology and Conversational Analysis, and anchored in the Sociointerational Discourse Analysis, this article sought to analyze the speeches of health professionals and their association with stigmas related to institutionalized older women at the time of bathing care. Data were collected using field notes and recordings of interaction moments between caregivers and residents of a selected Long-Term Care Facility (LTCF) for Older Adults. Corroborating the literature on the theme, the results indicate some common characteristics regarding stigmas experienced by older persons living in LTCF, such as age and shelter as vectors of stigmatization, repetition, and confirmation of stigma, as well as refusal of the stigma by the desiring being. Despite the limitations inherent to this study, further research should be replicated in other care contexts, analyzing interactions established with this population, thus providing a broader view of these interactions and their repercussions on the actors involved.
