The auxiliary verb vir a (lit. ‘come to’) as a marker of posteriority

This paper discusses, from a predominantly semantic perspective, the auxiliary verb vir a (lit. ‘come to’) as a marker of posteriority, distinguishing between two temporal and modal values that it can be associated with: one purely prospective and non-factual, as in the sentence se tudo corresse bem, viríamos a descobrir a verdade (‘if everything went well, we would discover the truth’), the other prospective-retrospective and factual, as in the sequence tinham-nos mentido; só viríamos/viemos a descobrir a verdade uns dias depois (‘they had lied to us; we would only discover the truth a few days later’). Various grammatical factors affecting the use of this auxiliary verb are scrutinized, viz. type of temporal perspective point, tense and mood values, Aktionsart of the described eventualities, possible presence of adjuncts of posteriority, or comparable prospective forms; the relevance of taking into account presupposed information is emphasised, though not elaborated upon. Contexts in which the use of vir a appears to be redundant, i.e. where its elimination does not affect the truth conditions of the sentence, are analysed in some detail.
