Abstract

This work aimed to reflect on colorism, also called pigmentocracy, using the metaphor COLORISM IS A COLOR PALETTE. Assuming the theoretical perspective of multimodal metaphor, it provides input to problematize the classification construct of Brazilian society based on colors and analyzes the different social processes involved. The theoretical framework relates discourse and ideology. In particular, it draws on the works of Hodge, Kress and Jones (1979), Fairclough (1989); Bessa and Sato (2018); Lakoff and Johnson (1980, 1999); Forceville (1996, 2008, 2009); Johnson (2017); and Sperandio (2019, 2020). These sources are used to address issues related to the conceitual construction of the term Colorism from a cognitive perspective. The methodology was based on a critical analysis of theoretical frameworks that articulated concepts from Cognitive Linguistics and Discourse Studies. The analysis revealed a system of exclusionary human relations and the necessity of rethinking forms of human evaluation in a respectful manner. This is contrary to forms of discrimination and injustice that are linked to historical prejudice and relegate a significant portion of the population to subalternity, thereby hindering their social advancement.
