This is a descriptive study with a qualitative approach that aims to identify the most vivid feelings of children's companions during perioperative period, as well as to offer a therapeutic reception and to evaluate the assistance provided to patient's family and friends. The research took place in a university hospital of Rio de Janeiro during 2007, and an interview was used to collect data. Fifteen companions, mainly patients' mothers, joined the study. Data analysis showed three main cathegories: impression of the surgical center; feelings of the companions regarding the child's operation; and companion's perceptions about nursing care during intraoperative period. Feelings of fear, preoccupation, anxiety, nervousness and hope for successful outcomes were highlighted. It is important to offer preoperative support and orientation to children's companions in order to favor comfort, confidence and security.Downloads
