Abstract

This is a critical reflection on health care , on the implementation of principles of the Brazilian Single Health System (SUS), the role of nursing and basic health care as a field for professional training. This reflection takes holistic health care as its analytical axis, highlighting health care as a "know how to do" that underlies action in health, where nursing is a relevant agent in this process. Finally, we underline the need to get to know the innovative experiences in the SUS in basic health care, opportunities for the practice of the defense of life and the right to health.
