Chagas'disease is an endemic Brazilian disease and may cause sequels to several human organs, such as the colon (chagasic megacolon). Sigmoid colon is the most frequent affected segment of the colon. Chagasic megacolon is characterized by an abnormal peristalses and chronic fecal stasis. As a consequence the colon becomes dilated and evolve to some complications such as fecaloma, volvulus, and perforation. Clinically, the disease is manifested as a progressive constipation, and some cases have no clinical control, ending with the indication of surgical treatment. The postoperative period can be somewhat difficult for the patient, and several measures must be undertaken during nursing care. The purpose of this study was to identify basic directions related to nursing care that could be useful during the postoperative period. Nursing prescriptions were reviewed and analyzed, and hygienic, signs and symptoms were identified as the most relevant ones, to improve the general care for the patients. In conclusion, the authors suggest integral and specific nursing prescriptions for these patients.Downloads
