Abstract

The relationship between the complexity of the climacteric period and how nurses may help women overcome such period became the incentive for this study. It is a qualitative research that aims to determine the nurses' knowledge regarding the climacteric period, its definition, the specific activities'planning that care for women in climacteric as well as the importance they give to such activities. Data were collected from five nurses aged between 22 and 51 in semi structured audio recorded interviews. Interpretation and analysis were based on their contents. The nurses seemed to know very little about the subject and almost nothing about what the climacteric period means. They showed no training to develop proper planning and though they realized how important their role was, some of them said they did not carry them out in their daily routine. This research emphasized the extreme importance of the nurses being able to gather more information about such subject for them to be able to give proper assistance, reflect about it and be aware of the need of such practice. With that in mind, the transmission of the importance and the essential value of the nurse's work during this dysfunctional process experienced by middle-aged woman, he/she contributes in a significant way to demystify and reassign this phase in a woman's life
