Objective: to describe a case involving mental health research with women deprived of liberty.
Methods: this is an experience report based on the lived experience of a group of researchers in a mixed- gender prison facility in Southern Brazil. Results: the report emphasizes the ethical, methodological, and institutional aspects involved in the process of entering, remaining in, and exiting the research setting, highlighting the bureaucratic, emotional, and symbolic barriers that permeate research in restrictive environments. The experience also reflects on public policies aimed at the health of women deprived of liberty and on the need to strengthen the intersectoral network that promotes the right to health and human dignity within the prison system. Final Considerations: the experience made it possible to understand that conducting research in a prison setting is more than a methodological exercise; it constitutes a political and humanizing act. The ethical, institutional, and emotional challenges experienced throughout the process required the researchers to demonstrate empathy, patience, and ethical rigor.
