Abstract

This article deals with the treatment of asphyxiated newborn according to recommendations on the International Guidelines for Neonatal Resuscitation reviewed in 2000 by the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Heart Association. Birth asphyxia incidence, up-to-date practices for treating meconium stained amniotic newborn fluid, heat loss prevention, oxygenation and ventilation, chest compression maneuvers, medication, volume expansion and vascular access are shown in this review. The nurse's role as a member of staff who participates in neonatal resuscitation is discussed by the authors.
