Mangrove: a superior rhizome?

Abstract

The aim of this article is to problematize the mangrove in relation to the schizoanalytic concept of rhizome. From a countercolonial perspective, we investigated the mangrove and used its ecological reference to map and elaborate some of its principles of effectuation, hypothesizing an intensive potential superior to the rhizome. As a method, we carried out theoretical research, in a kind of bibliographic cartography, on articles about the mangrove, linking it to the theoretical-methodological framework of Deleuze and Guattari's schizoanalysis. As a result, we found in the mangrove not only the principles of connection, heterogeneity, multiplicity, a-signifying rupture, cartography and decalcomania, but also two others that we elaborated: the principles of enveloping the outside and the production of life. The mangrove provides an envelope for an open connection between ecosystems, just as from death, putrefaction and decomposition it will generate a cauldron of new lives, in a becoming-life. This analysis broadens our understanding of the rhizome and its effectuation in different contexts, emphasizing the importance of working with concepts and enhancing a counter-colonial perspective of schizoanalysis, highlighting a local, everyday, and territorial Brazilian horizon.
