SYPHILIS, HIV AND HEPATITIS B SCREENING AS PART OF MEDICINE STUDENTS COLLECTIVE HEALTH TRAINING

Abstract

Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) are a global concern due to the millions of new cases annually. Belo Horizonte, in particular, has rates of detection of acquired syphilis above the national average. Thus, screening actions are important to identify asymptomatic cases and improve patient outcomes. This article aimed to report the experience of second-year medical students in a screening action for syphilis, HIV and hepatitis B. The proposal arose from a quick estimate in the territory covered by a Health Center and was performed using rapid tests (Immunochromatographic). The students were previously trained to carry out the tests together with professionals from a Basic Health Unit (UBS) in the south-central region of Belo Horizonte. The action contributed to the development of academics' interpersonal and communication skills, providing them with a closer relationship with the community. The model focused on the gaps of the field was able to generate value for the health Center, contributing to a closer relationship with the teaching institution. The implementation of the action described periodically can be a option for continuous and opportunistic screening, complementing routinely adopted testing protocols. Also, the action provided practical knowledge about epidemiological surveillance, screening and notification of diseases that have a direct impact on public health, benefiting both the community and the medical training of students.
