The importance of volunteering in hospitals and its impact on the development of capacities of future healthcare professionals

Volunteering in hospitals offers an opportunity to have meaningful experiences, discover new perspectives and develop skills, whilst contributing positively to the well-being of patients. The objective of the work is to evaluate the impact of volunteering on the well-being of on patients and on the training of health students who work as volunteers. The methodology involved data collection through pre-evaluation and interviews, admitted to descriptive statistical and content analysis. Answers to multiple-choice questions were analyzed quantitatively and open-ended questions were analyzed qualitatively. The research was carried out with 35 students from the technical course in Clinical Analysis at Technical College of UFMG and 46 patients treated at Hospital da Baleia in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais. The results demonstrated that students recognize the importance of volunteering and that this activity contributes to their learning process, personal growth and choice of future profession. Patients reported that volunteers provided emotional support and companionship during meetings. The data collected demonstrates that the involvement of students as volunteers in hospitals has a positive impact on both their professional, learning and personal habits. Providing enriching experiences for volunteers and improving patient satisfaction and quality of life.
