Challenges of “being a woman”

Abstract

Violence against women involves any act, motivated by gender, that results in suffering or death. This form of abuse constitutes an important public health problem and has increased in recent years. There is a lack of information and community actions aimed at identifying and preventing this issue. Therefore, it is necessary to carry out health education actions to educate the population. Methodology: This is an experience report about an extension project at a private college in Belo Horizonte, which worked in a support house for women in vulnerable situations. Meetings were held between the extension agents and the residents of the house. Topics chosen by the women were covered. The searches were carried out in Portuguese in the Google Scholar and Scielo databases. Result and Discussion: For women, being a woman presents challenges around feminine authenticity. There is a perceived lack of knowledge about issues related to female sexuality. Communication and empathy skills were developed with the target audience. Conclusion: Health education projects are of fundamental importance in raising awareness among women, providing capacity to identify and prevent forms of violence against women.
