EDUCAÇÃO EM DIABETES EM EVENTO NA PRAÇA MUNICIPAL DE DIVINÓPOLIS-MG

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus screening and diabetes education are activities of paramount importance to public health. The extension project "Education in Diabetes" held two events in the city square of Divinópolis-MG, whose objectives were to track diabetes mellitus and arterial hypertension in the population, through the capillary glycemic test and blood pressure measurement, respectively, and the transmission of knowledge about diabetes mellitus through posters and booklets, in order to raise awareness about the prevention of the disease, glycemic control and self-care improvement. 215 individuals participated in the events, among which 17.2% and 28.4% had systolic blood pressure greater than or equal to 140 mmHg and diastolic blood pressure greater than or equal to 90 mmHg, respectively. 9.8% used hypoglycemic agents, 28.4% used antihypertensives and 5.6% used both drugs. Among the individuals who used hypoglycemic agents, 33.3% had capillary glycemia ≥180 mg/dL, which is characterized by poor glycemic control. Among the individuals who did not use hypoglycemic agents, 23.9% had glycemia >126 mg/dL, which indicates an altered glycemia at screening. Throughout the execution of these events aimed at health promotion, it was possible to identify individuals that could have diabetes mellitus through screening and to make them aware of the importance of early diagnosis and treatment. Furthermore, it was possible to guide individuals with diabetes mellitus on the importance of self-care and glycemic control.
