The importance of the printed institutional repository

In order to ensure access to old research materials, it is suggested that printed institutional repositories be created with remote storage. The term “printed repository” is used because it is understood to be the most appropriate to describe the environment that brings together low-use items from various libraries, which will be stored indefinitely in a secure environment. The criteria for selecting items to integrate the printed repository are discussed. The storage system known as the Harvard Model is presented as a suggestion for implementation in Brazil, although others are listed. The management system used at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology - MIT, which integrates the OPAC (Aleph 500) and the interlibrary loan system (ILLiad©), which results in rapid delivery of the digitized document to the user, is presented. It concludes by discussing the ongoing uncertainty about maintaining access to electronic journals, for economic reasons. The aim is to start a discussion on the subject with peers and, based on the experiences of North American libraries, to propose and improve similar actions in Brazil. It is believed that the creation of consortia and cooperation between various academic institutions is a way of further maximizing the use of physical space and access to information.
