Copyright and Scientific Communication: challenges for libraries

The article deals with the advances and challenges for scientific communication arising from the regulation of copyright and the role of libraries in the preservation and dissemination of knowledge. It analyses the access problems created by the expansion of intellectual property rights and the responses that have emerged in opposition to the growing commercialization of scientific production, such as the 'open access' movement. This analysis exposes the limits of the responses formulated so far and indicates the challenges to be faced by libraries in order to guarantee the effectiveness of scientific communication and the proper performance of their functions as fundamental instruments of national development.
