Open access as a strategy for the dissemination and preservation of student scientific production: the Digital Library of Monographs at the University of Brasilia

Abstract

This is a report on the pioneering experience of the University of Brasilia (UnB) with the implementation of its Digital Library of Monographs (BDM), which uses the principles of open access to manage and disseminate the scientific production of its undergraduate and specialization courses. In nine months of operation, the BDM has recorded around two hundred thousand downloads in several countries. With this initiative, the UnB Central Library is showing that it is possible to make course final papers accessible to anyone with Internet access, breaking down geographical barriers to accessing academic information.
