About the Journal
Editorial Ethics
The journal follows the principles established by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), with emphasis on the following responsibilities:
Authors: originality and accuracy in citations; prohibition of duplicate submissions; clarity in identifying authorial contributions; data integrity; declaration of conflicts of interest and ethical aspects of the research.
Reviewers: objective and confidential evaluations; abstention in cases of conflict of interest; responsibility for identifying relevant omissions.
Editors: impartial, confidential, and well-founded decisions; commitment to editorial transparency; ethical handling of complaints while safeguarding the right of response.
Conflicts of interest must be disclosed from the outset of the editorial process. Inquiries, errata, and retraction requests should be sent to: algoritmosesociedade@gmail.com.
Focus and Scope
Algorithms & Society (A&S) understands scientific research as a reflective and a transformative practice of institutions and legal-social experience. It primarily publishes works in Law, Philosophy, and Sociology, while also welcoming contributions from related fields such as Political Science, Economics, Anthropology, and Urban Studies, among others.
The journal aims to:
– Encourage academic production by undergraduate and graduate students;
– Disseminate research from UFMG and other institutions without any hierarchical distinction;
– Foster research networks between Law and other Humanities disciplines;
– Establish itself as a national and international reference journal;
– Uphold criteria of parity and diversity in its editorial boards;
– Educate students and faculty through shared editorial experience.
Publication Frequency
A&S publishes two issues per year, following a continuous publication model to reduce the time between submission and publication.
Editorial Line and Accepted Formats
The Journal welcomes articles on technology, with special emphasis on the social and cultural transformations caused or shaped by digital and algorithmic processes.
Articles are published through public calls, and the journal accepts submissions in Portuguese, English, Spanish, French, and Italian.
Open Access and Licensing
The Journal adopts an immediate and free open access model, in accordance with the principles of the Budapest Open Access Initiative (BOAI). It uses the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License (CC BY 4.0), which allows use and sharing of texts with proper attribution.
Fees and Copyright
The journal does not charge submission or publication fees.
The CC BY 4.0 license adopted by A&S authorizes the use, sharing, and adaptation of published works, provided proper credit is given to the authors and to the original publication in the journal. The terms of this license do not apply to the copyright holder. This means that when authors retain full copyright, the license applies only to readers and the publisher.
Digital Preservation and Self-Archiving
The journal is part of the Cariniana Network and benefits from the technical support of UFMG’s Portal dos Periódicos to ensure the integrity and preservation of its files. Self-archiving of final versions is encouraged, provided that the original publication is properly referenced.
Peer Review Process
The editorial process consists of:
1. Desk-review by the editors, assessing scope, originality, relevance, and formatting;
2. Plagiarism check via anti-plagiarism software;
3. Forwarding to 2 (two) PhD reviewers external to UFMG, in a double-blind system;
4. In case of divergent reviews, a third reviewer may be consulted.
Through a standardized form, reviewers may choose to approve the manuscript (with optional suggestions), approve it with mandatory revisions (to be forwarded to the authors), or reject it. Authors receive reviewer feedback and are expected to revise their manuscripts according to editorial recommendations. Once accepted, articles undergo copyediting and are published online.
The average time from submission to publication is 4 (four) months.
The current rejection rate of the journal is 15%.
Errata, retractions, and complaints should be sent to algoritmosesociedade@gmail.com. After a preliminary review by the editorial board, requests involving substantial changes (such as the inclusion or removal of passages longer than one paragraph) will be deliberated by the Editorial Board. Minor corrections — such as typographical errors, formatting adjustments, ORCID updates, name/surname corrections, or replacement of files mistakenly published — will be processed summarily without the need for a formal vote.
DOI and Digital Identification
All articles published in A&S are assigned DOIs at no cost to the authors. DOI registration generally takes place within two to five months following publication, subject to the budgetary availability of UFMG.
Journal History
Algoritmos & Sociedade emerged from the activities of the Study Group on the Information Society and Algorithmic Governance (SIGA), coordinated by Professor Marco Antônio Sousa Alves at the UFMG Law School since 2017. It is also affiliated with UFMG’s Graduate Program in Law (PPGD-UFMG), an institution rated at the highest level by CAPES. As the result of a critical research trajectory on technology, law, and society, A&S is consolidating itself as an interdisciplinary and international space for reflection on the legal and political challenges of the digital era, articulating academic research and theoretical innovation.
