Abstract

Introduction: The climacteric causes decisive hormonal changes for the appearance of physical and psychological alterations, including oral manifestations.

Objective: To assess the oral health condition and stomatological changes in climacteric women, users or not of biphosphonates.

Materials and Methods: Cross-sectional, descriptive study, that evaluated climacteric patients from a referral center. The sample was for convenience, including patients diagnosed with climacteric, users and non-users of bisphosphonates, evaluated through interviews, obtaining the CPO-D, IPV, ISG indexes and panoramic and/or periapical radiographic analysis. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics.

Results: Half of the sample had a high CPO-D and all of them exhibited some degree of gingival inflammation (64.1% mild inflammation and 35.9% moderate/severe inflammation), therefore, the majority had an unsatisfactory oral health condition. The most frequent stomatological changes included candidiasis (48.4%), hyposalivation (26.6%), recurrent aphthous stomatitis (10.9%), fissured tongue (7.8%) and burning mouth syndrome (6.3%). The radiographic evaluation did not identify significant alterations. No evidence was found of the association enteral use of bisphosphonates with oral changes.

Conclusions: The oral changes observed seems to be associated with oral hygiene/health conditions and common factors of advancing age and climacteric, with no possible bond with the use of oral bisphosphonates.
