The Role of the Dental Surgeon in Palliative Treatment in Oncological Patients

Aim: To demonstrate the relevance of the dentist’s inclusion in the multidisciplinary team in the palliative care of cancer patients.
Methods: This is a literature review from searches performed in the SciELO, Lilacs, PubMed, and Google Scholar databases. The exclusion criteria were complete articles in Portuguese and English, dated from 2018 to 2023. Incomplete articles, annals of events, dissertations, theses, and manuals or management guides were excluded.
Results: 12 articles were included, confirming a higher frequency of oral implications in patients affected by cancer, and submitted to radiotherapy treatments. The care of the oral mucosa, in this sense, is indispensable, because it eliminates risks of infection, leading to a better comfort of the patient and a better quality of life.
Conclusion: The dentist’s participation in palliative care procedures for cancer patients is essential to ensure better health and well-being for these individuals.
