The wearing of the core and the cement line maximize the ultrasonic removal of intraradicular cast posts

Abstract

This in vitro study assessed the influence of the wearing of the core and the cement line in the ultrasonic removal of intraradicular cast posts. Twenty-four premolars with single root canals were sectioned transversally at the cementoenamel junction, keeping them 15mm of the root. The root canals were endodontically treated, post spaces were prepared at a 9 mm depth, and their impressions were obtained, followed by casting. The zinc phosphate cement (SS White) was used in post luting, and the set was fixed to PVC tubes in self-curing acrylic resin. The blocs were placed into an oven at 37ºC and 100% moisture. Seven days later, the samples were randomly distributed into 2 groups (n=12): G1- wearing of the core and the cement line + ultrasound and G2- ultra-sound only. In G1, the cores were worn out with a # 1557 bur and a tapered diamond point # 3203 in the cement line at 2 mm depth. The Enac (Osada) device was used with the power set to maximum (ST 09 tip) on all surrounding surfaces of the cores. Time of application was recorded with a chronometer until the complete post-dislodgment and data could be analyzed by a t-Student test (p<0,05). Averages required for the removal of cast posts from G1 and G2 were 48.4 and 99.4 seconds, respectively, with a significant statistical difference observed between the groups (p=0.036). Therefore, the wearing of the core and the cement line significantly decreased the time of ultrasonic vibration in the removal of intraradicular cast posts cemented with zinc phosphate cement.
