Abstract

This retrospective study evaluated the participation of teachers of the course of dentistry of the State University of Montes Claros Unimontes in activities of research and extension along 2005 and 2006. Data were collected from documents provided by the Human Resource Department of Unimontes. Descriptive statistic analysis was carried out using a SPSS® 11.0 software as well as the test of Likelihood Ratio (p<0,05). Twenty-one docents took part in this survey, most of them female (61%), distributed in the areas of Integrated Clinics (5), Endodontics (3), Stomatology/Oral Pathology (3), Odontopediatrics (2), Periodontics (2), Prothesis (2), and Collective

Health (4). 33% and 47% of them took part simultaneously in research and extension in 2005 and 2006, respectively, having no significant difference (p>0,05) in this period. The professors of the disciplines Odontopediatrics (100%), Collective Health (75%), Integrated Clinics (60%), and Endodontics (33%) carried out collective actions

in research and extension, while the professors of Periodontics/Oral Pathology, and Prothesis did not take part simultaneously in activities of research and extension in the period. However, all Stomatology/ Oral Pathology professors performed research activities. Therefore, significant differences (p<0,05) were found when comparing the disciplines the docents teach with the practices of research and/or extension. It can be concluded that a number of the docents evaluated performed activities of research and/or extension, but the practice of these actions can be increased.
