Grammatical Analysis of Demonstratives in Novels and Newspaper News Written in the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries in the Northern Region (Amazon) of Brazil Looking for Linguistic Change

This article presents grammatical analysis of the demonstratives “este,” “esse,” “aquele” (inflections and compositions) and grammatical constructions analysis composed of these demonstratives. The analyses are based on data of texts by romance and news genres produced in the Amazonas region in the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries. In this diachronic panorama, the author observes if grammatical constructions and morphological and syntactic aspects reveal signs of a reorganization of the demonstrative system from ternary to binary. Whenever possible, the data obtained are compared with another study on the same theme, methods, synchronies and textual genres. The study confirms the rise of the form “esse” due to the decline of the form “este”, allowing us to observe the tendency to reduction of the demonstrative system from ternary to binary in the Amazonas region, with the prevalence of the forms “esse” and “aquele.” The result, which is consistent with the comparative research, allows for the understanding of nuances of the processes of linguistic variation and change that are occurring in the demonstrative system of Brazilian Portuguese.
