This study, related to the concept of ‘freixo’ (‘ash tree’), sought to document and analyze in detail the phonetic variety that this concept assumes in the european space, with particular attention to what is observed in Portuguese territory, but also encompas- sing other linguistic territories. For this purpose, and with the help of linguistic atlases, a fine and detailed analysis was carried out of various forms and pheno- mena related to the behavior of consonants and vowels connected with this word in the different territories where this concept exists. This allowed us to conclude the existence of transversal phenomena at different languages, and that the linguistic continuum observed does not always obey the political borders of the various countries.
