The Chronotope Sertão
Space and Time in the Anthropocene

This article seeks to create a new concept of chronotope based on Mikhail Bakhtin's original formulation and considering the epistemological changes to which the concepts of time and space have been subjected in recent studies developed in the Anthropocene. Researchers such as Bruno Latour (2020; 2021) and Anna Tsing (2015; 2023) have been focusing on the transformed notions of agency, nature, culture, history, and humanity, for example, as evidence of a time of epistemic rupture. This text will use some of these observations to rethink the literary chronotope. It also aims, albeit in a preliminary way, to test the “new chronotope” in the “backlands/sertão” narrated by Euclides da Cunha in Os sertões. In doing so, the article also provides a short discussion on the concept of landscape.
