Abstract

The Brazilian Dramatic Literature reflects a latent tension with
regards to the resumption of Greco-Roman Culture. The Classics evoke a
subaltern condition from which we want to be free. However, the bond is
inescapable. Such impasse resulted frequently in the production of works
that are quite relevant and original. In Pedreira das Almas, Jorge Andrade,
heir to both the European and the North American scholarships, recreates
the past from the fundamental guidelines of the Hellenic Culture: the
obsession for self-recognition, the freedom in creation, the resources of
Ancient Rhetoric applied not only to language but, above all, to thought
– the composition of characters in chiasm, for an example – and the
conception of Tragedy as a movement of transformation of a Culture.
