“The Small Gesture of a Poem”

This paper aims to present a reading of several poems from Ana Hatherly’s book “The Black Peacock” (2003). As will be demonstrated, the peacock is part of the Baroque imagery, explored in depth by the poet. In addition to identifying 17th- and 18th-century symbolism in the poems of this work, we will emphasize the dialogic nature of the texts, given the second section, in which the Portuguese poet writes a Postscript to Paul Celan. Thus, these nuances of Hatherly’s poetry converge toward a metapoetic reflection, through which it is possible to infer that in this creative process, the poem and the essay coincide, or that each poem is a kind of essay. The methodology adopted in this analysis is none other than that which the poems themselves demand of the reader, verse by verse. However, we will draw on other reflections for the theoretical foundation of the study, such as those of Maurice Blanchot, Michel Collot, Roland Barthes, among others.
