the Ethical and Aesthetic Body in O filho de mil homens by Valter Hugo Mãe

Our reading of the portuguese novel O filho de mil homens (2016), by Valter Hugo Mãe, centers its analytical focus on the axiological category of the ethical and aesthetic body, grounded in the theoretical and philosophical premises of Mikhail Bakhtin. In the work under consideration, we observe the development of the i-other interrelation, through which the characters are constituted as uncanny, grotesque and alteritarian bodies — spheres of aesthetic and discursive inquiry consolidated by the contributions of Sigmund Freud (2019) and Bakhtin (1987; 2018; 2023). The absolute ethical and aesthetic necessity of the other reverberates as both axiom and primordial activism for the creation of fictional literature, as well as in the empathetic experiencing of the external boundaries of its characters.
