Author Guidelines

Types of Documents Accepted

  1. Articles: It includes unpublished manuscripts that present results of empirical or theoretical research or a systematic and integrative critical review of scientific and academic production in the field. Must be between 6,000 and 12,500 words. Submit a new entry to the Articles section.
  2. Reviews: It includes manuscripts that present a critical reading of works relevant to the educational field that have been published in the last 2 years. Must be between 1,500 and 3,000 words. Submit a new entry to the Reviews section.
  3. Evaluative Reviews: It includes evaluative reviews originating from an open peer review process of manuscripts. Must be between 3,000 and 6,000 words. Submit a new entry to the Evaluative Reviews section.
  4. Open Peer Review: It includes opinion articles on current topics of interest in the educational field. It must be between 3,000 and 5,000 words. Make a new submission for the Open Word section.
  5. Interviews: It gathers unpublished interviews that present relevant contributions to the educational field. It must be between 3,000 and 5,000 words. Make a new submission for the Interview section.
  6. Thematic Dossier: It gathers a set of articles that address a specific theme, conceived from a proposal received from the academic community or from a call made by the editors. Its objective is to address a theme or issue in depth, based on original and relevant analyses. Make a new submission for the Thematic Dossier section.

Manuscript Preparation

When starting the manuscript submission process, authors must verify that their manuscripts comply with the items listed below. Submissions that do not comply with these guidelines will be rejected.

  1. The manuscript must be directed to one of the following sections: Article, Review, Evaluative Review, Open Word, Interview, or Dossier. It must be submitted exclusively in the format of the template available at the link https://periodicos.ufmg.br/index.php/edrevista/templates and sent through the online system https://periodicos.ufmg.br/index.php/edrevista/about/submissions).
  2. A maximum of three (3) authors is required for submission, and at least one of the authors must hold a doctoral degree.
  3. Proposals submitted simultaneously to another national or international journal will not be accepted.
  4. A two-year interval will be observed between the publication of a manuscript by the author and the beginning of a new submission process by the same author.
  5. In all cases, the title must have a maximum of 15 words and must be presented in Portuguese, English, and Spanish.
  6. Abstract only for Article and Open Word submissions: Submit an abstract containing between 150 and 250 words in Portuguese, English, and Spanish, followed by a minimum of three and a maximum of five keywords, which must also be in the three languages. The abstract should explain, in an informative manner and without enumerating topics, the following items: general theme and research problem; objectives; methodology used; main results. The use of a single paragraph, active voice, and third-person singular, concise, and affirmative sentences is recommended. Abstracts in foreign languages ​​must be prepared with the respective grammatical rules. Automatic translations will not be accepted.
  7. For each section, the manuscript should contain:
    Article: between 6,000 and 12,500 words.
    Review: between 1,500 and 3,000 words;
    Evaluative review: between 3,000 and 6,000 words;
    Open Peer Review: between 3,000 and 5,000 words;
    Interview: between 3,000 and 5,000 words
    All authors of the manuscript must be named and linked to the article exclusively in the field indicated in the submission system. It is mandatory to provide an ORCID and a summary of their biography, postal address, telephone number, and institutional affiliation, according to the standards of Educação em Revista, even if the submission system does not indicate this as mandatory. https://periodicos.ufmg.br/index.php/edrevista/user/profile
  8. Explanatory footnotes should be used sparingly, only when strictly necessary for the understanding of the text. The notes should be numbered in Arabic numerals according to the sequence in which they appear in the text.
  9. Works published in conference proceedings are not accepted, except if the manuscript is modified to offer a significant proportion of unprecedented elements that justify a new publication. It is mandatory to inform the publication of a preliminary version in events, indicating the link to the article in the “comments to the editor” field of the submission system, if applicable.
  10. The publication of an article that presents research results involving human beings and carried out in Brazil must be supported by approval from the Research Ethics Committee (CEP). Articles by foreign authors must follow the ethical standards of their country of origin.
  11. The authors should indicate reviewers and their respective email addresses. These reviewers must have an updated registration with the journal as reviewers.
  12. Concepts and opinions expressed in the manuscript, as well as the accuracy and origin of the citations, are the sole responsibility of the author(s).
  13. If approved, the manuscript must undergo language review and bibliographic standardization, with a declaration from the professional who performed the service, whose responsibility will be exclusively from the author(s). The Journal may indicate registered professionals who perform the work, if necessary.
  14. The final, revised version must be submitted in the template format, with complete information on the author(s), institutional affiliation, and funding.

Editorial Guidelines for Submitting Thematic Dossiers

  1. Proposals for thematic dossiers can be submitted by the editorial committee after issuing a specific call for proposals with preparation guidelines, or directly from the academic community.
  2. Dossier proposals should be sent by email (revista@fae.ufmg.br) to the Editorial Committee, which will analyze them according to the scope and policy of the journal and issue an opinion on their feasibility.
    Dossier proposals must contain the following information:
    - Title.
    - Name and brief curriculum vitae of the organizer(s).
    - Abstract and brief justification of the proposed theme.
    - Dossier structure, containing:
    *List with titles and abstracts of the articles that will compose the dossier. The abstracts should contain: presentation of the problem, research procedures, main results, and main references.
    *Name and brief curriculum vitae of the authors of the articles that will compose the dossier.
  3. Proposals whose themes have already been published in other issues of the journal in the last five years will not be accepted, except for theoretical or other justifications, to be evaluated by the Editorial Committee.
  4. The proposal must contain a minimum of 6 and a maximum of 8 articles by researchers affiliated with different national and international institutions. At least 2 of these articles must necessarily be by foreign authors.
  5. Issue proposals with more than one author or organizer from the same institution will not be accepted.
  6. The proposal must comply with the editorial policy of Educação em Revista, especially regarding its contribution to the advancement of knowledge in the educational field.
  7. There must be clarity, coherence, and unity among the articles concerning the proposal as a thematic unit.
  8. If the proposal is approved, the authors must format the articles using the template available at the link and submit them through the journal's submission system, indicating the Section – Dossier – for publication (http://submission.scielo.br/index.php/edur/login), according to the deadlines of the Editorial Committee.
  9. The dossier should contain only articles.
  10. The articles in the dossier must comply with the same editorial standards established for submissions via continuous demand.
  11. Submitted articles will be evaluated by the Editorial Committee following the same rules and procedures adopted by the journal for articles submitted via continuous demand.
  12. The Editorial Committee may request changes or deletions of articles from the dossier.
  13. The organizers need to monitor the editorial production of the dossier during all stages. They should act as intermediaries between the editors and the authors to address issues related to the external reviewers. This includes language reviews and bibliographic standardization, editing the content, and other demands that may arise during the production of the dossier.
  14. The organizers must maintain confidentiality during the peer review process in accordance with single-blind review rules, while also ensuring compliance with deadlines during the evaluation and editing process.
  15. The organizers will prepare a presentation text for the dossier, which will be included in the editorial of the issue.
  16. The organizers should produce a short promotional text for social media about the dossier.
  17. The organizers and authors will not receive any payment from the journal.

The article must be submitted through the journal's portal at: https://periodicos.ufmg.br/index.php/edrevista/about/submissions, after completing registration and creating a login and password, and agreeing to the terms contained in the electronic submission form.

Digital Assets

  1. Illustrations, tables, graphs, and charts should be inserted into the text in an editable format, following standardized formatting.  They should include a title that allows the reader to understand the meaning of the data presented, without needing to refer back to the text. It should always be placed above the material and must follow IBGE standards. Example: Table 1 – Enrollment by region. The source of the data should be inserted at the bottom.
  2. Tables are organized in rows and columns, analogous to Cartesian axes, defining cells where the data are displayed. They are usually used to present numerical values. Avoid long tables that extend over more than one page. A table should be a simple and understandable element for the reader. Its purpose is to facilitate the presentation and comparison of information. Avoid using expressions such as: “figure below” or “table above,” for example. Always use the corresponding numbering of the referenced element: Figure 1, Table 1.
  3. Figures (photos, drawings, engravings, images, and maps) must have a minimum resolution of 300 dpi and be in JPG or PNG format, incorporated into the manuscript. All illustrations must have the author's permission if they are from third parties. All images must be properly numbered and accompanied by captions and source indication.

Citations and References

Citations should follow the format (Author's Last Name, year) or (Author's Last Name, year, p. xx). Different titles by the same author, published in the same year, should be differentiated by adding a letter after the date (Author's Last Name, Year, p. xx).

Citations within the text should follow the technical standard NBR 10520 of July 19, 2023, from the Brazilian Association of Technical Standards (ABNT-Associação Brasileira de Normas Técnicas) or APA – 7th Edition and meet the following criteria: a) Textual quotations of up to three lines should be incorporated into the paragraph, transcribed in quotation marks and accompanied by the following information in parentheses: last name of the author of the quotation, year of publication and page number; b) Textual quotations that exceed three lines should be placed in a separate paragraph, indented 4 cm from the left margin, in size 11, and without quotation marks.

References should contain only the authors and texts cited in the work and be presented at the end of the text, in alphabetical order, following the recent standards of the Brazilian Association of Technical Standards (ABNT) (https://www.normasabnt.org/citacoes/) or the American Psychological Association (APA) 7th edition.

Supplementary Documents

Authors must complete and sign the Open Science Compliance Form, provided by SciELO, and the Information Form on Research Ethics and the Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) Resources, the published preprint file, and submit them as supplementary documents during the online submission process.

Financing Statement

Authors of texts produced from research that received funding must indicatethe full name(s) of the funding agency(ies) in the manuscript, after the references and in the appropriate field of the electronic form, followed by the process number(s) or contract number(s).

DOI (Digital Object Identifier) ​​Registration

All manuscripts approved for publication in Educação em Revista will receive a Digital Object Identifier (DOI) in the final publication stage.

Editorial Production

Once the peer review process is complete, approved manuscripts enter the editorial production phase. Authors will be guided by the journal's secretariat on procedures for preparation, bibliographic standardization, and language revision. Authors are responsible for revision costs.

The journal will pay for the translation costs if subsidized by the university or funding agencies through editorial calls. The journal will recommend professionals to perform these services and will inform authors of the deadlines to be met. Authors will also be guided on publishing the manuscript in a second language (English, in the case of articles in Portuguese or Spanish; Portuguese, in the case of articles in English).
