Code of Conduct and Best Practices

Em Tese follows the guidelines of the COPE (Committee on Publication Ethics) Code of Conduct and Best Practices, and submissions must adhere to these guidelines. For information on the Code, please consult the original English text or its Portuguese translation.

Submission Guidelines

Em Tese accepts contributions that address theoretical and critical issues relevant to Literary Studies.

When submitting work to Em Tese, authors should pay attention to the guidelines below, the observance of which will be considered in the evaluation of the texts. If you have any questions, the author should contact the editorial team via email at emteseufmg@gmail.com.

Submission

• The publication of articles by the same author without an interval of at least one issue between each is prohibited, even in cases of co-authorship.
• Texts in Portuguese, Spanish, French, and English will be accepted. The journal reserves the right to publish the article in the original language or in translation, according to the decision of the Editorial Board, provided that the author agrees.
• Authors may submit their texts to the sections (1) Dossier; (2) Literary Studies; (3) Literature Teaching; (4) Translation and Editing; (5) In Thesis; and (6) Reviews.
• The journal operates on a continuous submission basis and publishes semi-annually, with the exception of the Dossier section, which has its own thematic call for papers, and the submission deadline in the news tab must be observed.
• The works will be submitted to the approval of the members of the Editorial Board, who may suggest that authors revise their texts according to the observations indicated in the reviews made by the evaluators. If the authors do not correct or revise the text, it will be rejected without further justification.
• Submissions will only be accepted through the journal's submission portal; sending work via email is prohibited.
• All submissions must be anonymized; the presence of any element that could identify the authorship of the text under evaluation is prohibited. If authorship is indicated, the text will be rejected.
• In order to guarantee an ethical, transparent, and responsible use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) / LLM tools and following the recommendations of CNPq and CAPES, authors who use any resource derived from AI tools are required to indicate in an additional document the purpose of the use and in which parts they were used. This document must be named "Mandatory Declaration of AI Use" and must contain:
  • Name(s) of the tool(s) used (and the version);
  • Section(s) or part(s) of the text in which it was used;
  • Reasons for use.
• The use of AI in the production of text content, such as theoretical arguments, analysis of works, or conclusions, is prohibited.
• The text will be rejected without further justification if the use of tools without the declaration is perceived.
• Texts with the declaration will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis by the editorial board and may also be rejected without further justification.

ENSURING BLIND PEER REVIEW

To ensure the integrity of blind peer review for submissions to the journal, all possible care must be taken not to reveal the identity of authors and reviewers during the process. This requires that authors, editors, and reviewers (who may submit documents to the system as part of the evaluation process) take certain precautions with the text and document properties:

1. The authors of the document have removed their names from the text, replacing them with "Author" and the year in references and footnotes, instead of author names, article title, etc.
2. In Microsoft Office documents, the author's identification must be removed from the document properties (in the File > Properties menu), starting from File in the main menu, and clicking in sequence: File > Info > Inspect Document > Remove Document Properties and Personal Information > Save.

FORMATTING

1) Articles and Essays

Authors must submit their work following the guidelines below.

Articles that do not comply with these standardization requirements will be summarily rejected.

a. The submitted file must be in “.docx” (Microsoft Word) or “.odt” (OpenOffice) format.

b. Articles and essays must have between 10 (ten) and 20 (twenty) pages, excluding reference pages (texts with a different length than this standard will be initially evaluated by the Editorial Board), with the body of the text typed in Times New Roman font, size 12, justified and with 1.5 line spacing. Footnote text should be typed in Times New Roman, size 10, single-spaced, justified, without paragraph indentation.

c. Pages should be formatted as A4, without page numbering, with 2 cm margins.

d. The text must be formatted as follows:

• Title in the language of the text, centered on the first line, bold, and Times New Roman 12 font. The title in another language should be one line below the first title, centered, bold, and Times font size 12.
• The word "abstract" should be typed in the same font as the text, written in the same language as the article (RESUMO, ABSTRACT, RÉSUMÉ or RESUMEN), in uppercase and bold, followed by a colon. The abstract text should contain up to 200 words. One line below, write "keywords" (or KEYWORDS, MOTS-CLÉS or PALABRAS CLAVE) in uppercase, bold, followed by a colon. The article's keywords should contain three to five terms separated by semicolons, without bolding.
• The abstract and keywords in another language should be two lines below the previous one, following the same formatting suggested above.
• Section titles and subtitles should not be numbered, and should be written in bold, with only the first letter capitalized.
• If the text is written by more than one author, a document entitled “Author Contributions” should be submitted using the Taxonomy of Collaborator Functions - CRediT.

f. Citations:

Citations should follow the author-date system of the NBR 10520:2023 standards.

Citations in a foreign language should be translated in the body of the text, inserting the source text in a footnote. The author of the translations should be indicated after the page number of the citation, according to the guidelines of NBR 10520 (2023).

Omissions in direct quotations should be indicated by ellipses in square brackets: [...]. The expressions idem, ibidem, op. cit., and loc. cit. should not be used. The period should be used to end the sentence, not the quotation.

g. References:

References should come after the last element of the text or after the acknowledgments, if any. They should be in alphabetical order, single-spaced, and justified, without indentation on the second line. Insert a line between each entry, removing automatic spaces before and after the paragraph.

References should follow the ABNT NBR 6023:2025 standards. The basic forms of references are presented and exemplified below; pay attention to including the author's full name:

If any of the referenced works are available online, their data must be indicated: electronic address, preceded by the expression “Available at:”, and the date of access to the document (day, abbreviated month and full year, separated only by a space), preceded by the expression “Accessed on:”.

For other cases, direct consultation of the ABNT standards is recommended.

2) Translations

Translations of unpublished texts into Portuguese will be accepted, duly accompanied by the authorization of the copyright holder, when applicable. Complete, partial, or abbreviated translations may be submitted (in the latter two cases, it is necessary to specify the translated and excluded parts). The translator's data must follow the formatting proposed for articles. The author of the translation may create a tTitle for the work. In this case, the complete references of the translated work should appear below this title. Translations whose title is the reference of the translated work itself will also be accepted. Indicate the ISSN (International Standard Serial Number) or ISBN (International Standard Book Number). Translations should have a maximum of 20 pages, including illustrations, graphs and tables, and excluding bibliographic references. Works longer than this standard will be evaluated by the Editorial Board.

3) Reviews

Reviews of books, plays, performances, installations, films or music albums produced within the last 5 years will be accepted. Reviews should be between 3 and 6 pages (not counting bibliography). The author of the review may create a title for it. In this case, the complete references of the reviewed work should appear below this title. Reviews whose title is the reference of the reviewed work itself will also be accepted. The text formatting should follow the standards presented for articles, but without the abstract and keywords. Reviews must be written by PhD holders, Masters degree holders, or postgraduate students.

4) Teaching Reports

Submissions of teaching reports will be accepted for the Literature Teaching section. Reports should focus on a specific teaching practice (or set of practices) or action, from which a critical reflection is carried out. Reports should follow the same guidelines as articles and essays.
