Abstract

The objective of the work was to applied quantitative criteria to classify riffles and pools. Morphologic, hydraulic and sedimentological surveys were executed in July of 2001, during a period of low flow, in the basin of the Guavirá stream, Marechal Cândido Rondon country, Paraná State, Brazil. The adopted criteria were: oscillation of the bed topography, comparison of geometric and hydraulic variables and bed sediment characteristics. The oscillation of the bed topography was studied applying the regression technique. Riffles correspond to zones of positive residuals and pools to zones of negative residuals from the regression equations. It was verified that the fitted regression line not was adequate to classify habitats with intermediate depths. This deficiency of the technique was compensated confronting hydraulic and geometric variables, such as Froude number, flow depth and velocity/depth ratio.
