The aesthetics of the young Herder and the Sturm und Drang

Johann Gottfried Herder was an indispensable thinker for Aesthetics and Theory of Literature in the mid-18th century, influencing directly and indirectly generations of writers and thinkers. Having written in several areas, from the philosophy of language to the philosophy of history, his thought is characterized by a refusal to theories that sought to find general foundations for artistic appreciation. His contribution was made through the valorization of the particular elements of art, such as culture and language, and also through the introduction of the concept of empathy [Einfühlung] as a form of cognition. His rejection of the generalist French rationalism paved the way for the Sturm und Drang and left a very strong mark on early German Romanticism, especially Friedrich Schlegel.
