Johann Gottfried von Herder foi um pensador essencial para a Estética e a Teoria da Literatura de meados do século XVIII, influenciando direta e indiretamente gerações de escritores e pensadores. Tendo escrito em diversas áreas, da Filosofia da Linguagem à Filosofia da História, o seu pensamento é caracterizado por uma recusa às teorias que buscavam encontrar fundamentos gerais para a apreciação artística. Sua contribuição se dá através da valorização dos elementos particulares da arte, como a cultura e a língua, e também pela introdução do conceito de empatia [Einfühlung] como forma de cognição. O seu rompimento com o racionalismo francês generalista abriu caminho para o Sturm und Drang, deixando uma marca muito forte ainda no Primeiro Romantismo Alemão, principalmente em Friedrich Schlegel.
