Abstract

This article seeks to bring to the Brazilian reader a debate of Merleau-Ponty and Lefort's work that has been little explored by our philosophical tradition. This is an important moment in Lefort's philosophical formation, who, by absorbing Merleau-Ponty's criticisms of his Trotskyist-Marxist formation, conceives a critical stance towards Marx's philosophy. This conduct paves the way for the most original moment of his work, which is outlined in the discovery of the political, a place that marks a tense distance in relation to Marxism-Trotskyism. We propose to present an important aspect of the so-called emergence of the political, which carries at its root the critique of the philosophy of the history of the proletariat. One of the privileged moments originates in the text in which Lefort criticizes Trotsky, which, according to Merleau-Ponty's later reading, still lacks a radical perspective to analyze the philosophical foundation that underlies every Marxist revolutionary, that is, the materialist dialectic.
