DESEJO E RESTAURAÇÃO NOS LIVROS IV E IX DA REPÚBLICA DE PLATÃO
THYMÓS E HESYCHÍA COMO INTERMEDIÁRIOS
Keywords:
Thymós, Hesychía, Metaxú, Pólis, PsychéAbstract
In this paper I intend to demonstrate how the conceptions of thymós and hesychía, described respectively in the Republic Books IV and IX, reveal the importance of the definition of tó metaxú. In the first section, I’ll analyze the epistemological statute of Θυμός, conceived as an intermediate function of soul insofar it can be recognized as a median position between rational and desiderative functions of cognitive soul. In the second section, I’ll examine the strategic notion of ἡσυϰία, a psychological condition that stipulates the cessation both of pleasure and pain, by which the agent misunderstood these conspicuous affections. In both cases, Plato develops the notion of metaxú as an epistemological dispositive that begets or a wrong judgment concerning sensations or improves the calculative moral decision as a reason’s recommendation. My purpose in this article is to scrutinize the inextricably link between pleasure and cognition, ἡδονή and επιστήμη, emerged from the tripartite theory of soul, related in Book IV and the phenomenology of constitutions in Books VIII and IX, in order to demonstrate the epistemological relevance of tó metaxú.
