Abstract

Carl Gustav Jung’s (1875-1961) method established a therapeutic and socio-cultural scientific approach to describing the essence of the psyche with a claim of universal validity. Pointing to the image’s relevance as a gateway to emotions, Jung influenced analytical practice, as evidenced by the enduring interest in this perspective. The contemporary relevance of his theory, still in development in clinical practice, is reinforced by its close connection to phenomenology, placing it within a growing movement toward scientific grounding. Archetypal psychology, a post-Jungian reading represented by the work of James Hillman (1926-2011), emphasizes this image-centered therapy. This phenomenological study in qualitative research aims to identify and understand moments in Hillman's production from the 1970s designated as the experience of listening to the image, here named archetypal listening. Elements indicate an epistemological congruence between Hillman's method and phenomenological reduction, providing a foundation for analyzing this segment of his work.

Diretor de Estudos do Instituto Mantiqueira de Psicologia Arquetípica (IMPAR). Prática clínica em São José dos Campos-SP.

    Cristiano Roque Antunes Barreira é Professor Titular da Universidade de São Paulo na Escola de Educação Física e Esporte de Ribeirão Preto e orientador junto aos Programas de Pós-graduação da EEFERP-USP e de Psicologia da Faculdade de Filosofia, Ciências e Letras de Ribeirão Preto (FFCLRP-USP).
