Abstract

The ability of Αncient Comedy to absorb quotes, adaptations, allusions, parodies or borrowings of works of different genres is well known. Detecting them has been an early concern of commentators and critics. In this regard, we propose in this paper the hypothesis that in the first lines of Aristophanes’ Clouds – peculiar and even contrasting with the rest of the author’s production– there is a parody of the mime, for presenting many of its most genuine features. Among others: an intimate environment, sharply drawn characters and a realistic aesthetic.
