The increase of family patrimony
the ideal of economy in the Xenophon's Economics
Keywords:
Xenophon, Economics, οἰκονομία, ἐγκράτεια, increaseAbstract
The objective of this paper is to explain the ideal of economy present in Xenophon's Economics, especially in chapters I to III. From a philological approach, the conversation between Socrates and Critobulus is explored, in which it is defined what economy is, what its first condition is and what its main purpose is. The conclusion reached is that the economy 1) is a knowledge (ἐπιστήμη) and an art (τέχνη) that consists of the administration of own family patrimony (οἰκονομία), 2) has ἐγκράτεια as its first condition and 3) aims to increase family patrimony (αὔξειν τοὺς οἴκους).
