Joachim of Fiore’s Concordia Novi ac Veteris Testamenti in Liber Sancti Andreae de Castello

Abstract

Study on folio 274r of Liber Sancti Andreae de Castello, an unpublished illuminated codex from 12th century, kept in Le Labo – Cambrai, France, catalogued as Ms. 528, containing a table arranged in 8 columns and 43 rows, two organization charts and a text at the bottom. The philological analyse of the folio was made based on Crane et al. (2008), Daniel (1983) and Pascua Vílchez (2021), among others, with the help of computational tools and consultation of digital repositories in Vatican Apostolic Library and National Library of France. We justify the study as being based on an unpublished manuscript, in addition to other published works on the same codex since 2019. As main goal, we set to reveal its content. Derived from it, to identify the text origin, to do the transcription into computer characters and to ease the access to its content for lay people, providing a translation to Portuguese. In order to achieve these goals, we applied a philological methodology supported by new technologies, known as Digital Philology or ePhilology. We conclude that folio 274r of manuscript Ms. 528 contains a commented table, summarizing, in the way of a scheme, calculations made by Joachim of Fiore in Liber Concordiae Novi ac Veteris Testamenti; the folio writing was made between 1196 and 1199; the table from Cambrai wasn’t the only one of its kind. There is another, almost identical, made in Corbie Abbey, kept nowadays in National Library of France.
